CPDA Disability Policy
The CPDA is committed to widening participation and
assisting/supporting disabled delegates during their studies. The CPDA
welcomes applications
from disabled delegates including deaf, visually impaired and dyslexic,
as well as those who have physical or mental health difficulties,
with unseen impairments such as epilepsy, and who are
temporarily disabled
while on the Scheme.
If you have a disability please inform the CPDA Office
when you first enrol on the programme as specific details regarding
a delegates disability are not requested on your application form.
We are then able to provide you with the best information, advice and
support based on your specific needs.

Support, information and advice
There is plenty of support, information and advice available at both
UWE and UoB for disabled delegates.
The Widening
Participation Office at the University of
Bristol is about encouraging and supporting people who have the ability,
motivation and potential to thrive at university, but who come from
groups that are currently under-represented in higher education. For
further information on how they can support you visit their web site.
The
Access Unit for deaf and disabled students at UoB and Disability
Resource Centre at UWE are there to provide you with confidential
advice and information throughout your studies on the following:
- Information on funding other than the DSA mentioned below
- Providing documentation to your Local Education Authority
(LEA) to enable you
to use your
Disabled
Students
Allowance
(DSA)
- How to access study skills support
- Organising interpreters
- Support with organising extra time in exams
- Identifying, organising and reviewing your communication support
requirements - Communication Services (UoB) and
Communication Support available
- Tuition and study skills support based on your particular needs.
The Access Unit has a study skills support
service which provides tuition.
- Providing you with other sources of useful information outside
the University.
Funding
Help with applying for the Disabled
Students Allowance (DSA). This allowance is ONLY available to UK
students, who must apply to their LEA for it. The allowance can be
used to finance equipment, assessments, Access Unit support, interpreters,
voice recognition software etc. i.e. the additional extra costs incurred
by disabled students. It is not income assessed but is only available
to some post-graduate students.
Non-UK students (including those from
the EU) are NOT eligible for a DSA. Any student in this category
is encouraged to find out about alternative funding before accepting
a place on the scheme. The Student Finance Office may be able to
help with this. Unfortunately, for non-UK students, funding is not
even available to
assess
student needs. It can
be very difficult for some disabled students to manage their studies
without
additional
financial assistance.
