Dyslexic Delegates

I think I am dyslexic - what should I do?

Please inform the CPDA Office so that we can provide you with the best information, advice and support.

If you think you may be dyslexic then contact either the Access Unit at UoB or Disability Resource Centre at UWE. Both will be able to give you advice as to what to do and how to go about getting a full dyslexia assessment test. At the Access Unit at UoB you can make an appointment to see the Disability Advisor who will be able to recommend whether you should complete the full assessment test through the Dyslexia Institute by a Chartered Psychologist. For further details click here.

How do I pay for this test? Is there any other Funding?

The main source of funding used by dyslexic and other disabled students is the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) which can be used to finance equipment, assessments, support, voice recognition software etc. However this allowance is ONLY available to UK students, who must apply to their LEA for it. It is not income assessed and is only available to some post-graduate students. For guidance on obtaining the allowance and other funding contact either the Access Unit or Disability Resource Centre.

What to do if you have already been identified as dyslexic?

At present we have a number of dyslexic delegates enrolled on the Scheme and there is plenty of support and information available. If you are dyslexic and have completed a full dyslexia assessment test then please inform the CPDA Administrator (FDM) when you enroll on the programme. They will then be able to identify with you what your support needs are and how these can be met by the CPDA Office and other appropriate persons.

What kind of support can you get?

  • The Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). (See above section How do I pay for this test? Is there any other Funding?)
  • Tuition and study skills support based on your particular needs. The Access Unit has a study skills support service which provides tuition.
  • Extra time in exams (most CPDA modules are assessed through assignments.)
  • The CPDA Office will help support you in any way it can, such as providing you with notes before modules or taping lectures. However it is your responsibility to let us know what your needs are.
