The Project Seminar
The Project Seminar is a one day event held twice a year,
usually in October and April in Bristol. Delegates who have completed
6-8 modules will automatically be invited to a seminar, as this
is the time to start thinking about the project.
Attendance at the workshop is essential as it provides information
and guidance
on
the following:
- Project requirements, both
from an academic and industrial view point;
- The commitment required from the delegate and their supporters;
- How projects are chosen;
- University support services for delegates during
their project;
- Selection of Academic and Industrial Supervisors;
- Good and bad practice;
- Examples of the research topics covered at
both Bristol universities;
- Writing a dummy proposal;
- Comments from recent graduates on how they coped with the project;
- Project submission and graduation ceremony.
Delegates are not required to
commence their projects after completing six modules and the Project
Seminar. The Seminar aims to make delegates aware
of the task ahead and to advise
on whom to contact with possible ideas.
At this stage, the delegate
may want to review his / her remaining module selection to ensure
it is compatible with the awarding University’s
requirements in light of the subjects he / she might choose for the
project.
No work should begin until the proposal has been developed and an
Academic Supervisor has been found. The Supervisor will actively participate
in progressing the 'early' proposal / thinking phase of the dissertation,
resulting in a formal proposal. Supervisors rarely need to be involved
until the majority of modules are completed and the remaining scheme
time can be dedicated to the proposal and resulting project. Most projects
do not take more than one year duration.
