Royal Aeronautical Society Logo

The Royal Aeronautical Society offer a number of awards, grants and scholarships. Many individuals from both industry and academia have benefited from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) educational awards. The first major scholarship to be founded by the Society in its present form was created in 1949. Today the Society administers educational awards from three major fund sources: The Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC); The General Educational Award Fund and The Alan Snudden Memorial Trust Fund

The purpose of the educational awards scheme is generally to provide financial assistance and support to individuals undertaking post-graduate studies / training and those engaged in aeronautical research / original work leading to the advancement and progression of the "art and science of aeronautics".

A typical size of an award can be up to £500, and the most common request for funds is to assist in travel to a conference or symposium to present a paper written by the applicant. Applicants need not be members of the Society - though many are - and it is hoped that all applicants and their referees/supporters will become members of the Society if they are not already. Applicants should also be aware that none of the above awards make any provision for course tuition fees/maintenance or pilot training.

Application Procedure for Educational Awards:

  • Applicants should apply directly to the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) for an award application form. This can also be downloaded from the RAeS website;
  • The Society's Professional Development Steering Group is responsible for considering all award applications;
  • It is not necessary for applicants to specify which award they wish to be considered for, as the Professional Development Steering Group makes this decision;
  • All applicants are notified of the group's decision within two months of receipt of completed application forms;
  • Successful award recipients are required to submit a post experience report on the activities pertaining to the award. The Society reserves the right to feature any of the activities relating to the award in any of the Society's publications.
